WHY PILATES ON REFORMER IS GOOD FOR YOU ?
STRENGTHEN YOUR CORE
Pilates breathing is one of the pillars of the method. It involves thoracic inhalation through the sides and back of the ribcage, followed by a long and forced exhalation that activates the deep stabilizing muscles of the spine, the central point of the method. Many sports practices do not allow for this, although it is essential to avoid injuries in daily life or during sports sessions.
IMPROVE YOUR FLEXIBILITY
Pilates exercises are designed not only to strengthen deep muscles, but also to stretch them at the same time. Pilates on reformer, tower or wunda chair, unlike Pilates on the floor, offers quite spectacular results in this respect, thanks to the machines' springs: the muscle is constantly contracting and stretching.
INCREASE YOUR BODY AWARENESS
We can do a lot of sport with the aim of physical performance and still have poor body awareness. Practising Pilates requires unwavering concentration to progress, and over time helps to improve our awareness of our own body. Little by little, the isolated engagement of each muscle is perceived in ever finer detail. The use of machines will maximize this body awareness via deeper sensations.
This is why Pilates is also highly recommended for people who are already very athletic: this body awareness will not only improve their performance, but also help them avoid body compensations and injuries.
PRACTICE WHATEVER YOUR PHYSICAL CONDITION
That's one of the great advantages of Pilates: it's a discipline for everyone, and can be adapted indefinitely to suit your age, musculature or current fitness level! Pilates allows you to strengthen yourself without the risk of injury.
Pilates, particularly on reformer is also recommended following injury or chronic pathology, once the rehabilitation program has been completed.
DID YOU KNOW?
Pilates was invented on reformer, not on the floor... and yes!!!!
The practice is named after its inventor, Joseph Pilates, a forerunner of physical strengthening in the early 20th century: suffering from health problems from an early age, he quickly realized that well-thought-out physical training that respected the human body would be the cure for many ills.
He began devising his method during the First World War, using the springs on the camp beds of wounded prisoners to help rehabilitate them: the support of the springs enabled movements to be accompanied, relieving pain while simultaneously building muscle. This was the forerunner of the Reformer.
Once in the U.S. in the 1940s, he worked with athletes, doctors and dancers to develop his well-thought-out method, which focused on strengthening deep muscles.
He developed other machines, such as the Cadillac, the Wunda Chair, the Arm Chair, the High Barrel and the Small Barrel. The range of exercises offered on these machines is virtually limitless in terms of adaptations to help each individual progress.
He later developed a wide range of floor exercises to make his practice accessible to everyone: the repertoire of floor exercises is equally rich, enabling the body to work as a whole.

The Pilates sessions on machines are doing me a world of good! As my upper body is very stiff, I feel more and more mobile as the sessions progress, and the rest of my body is also more “solid”. Mélanie knows how to adapt the sessions to work gently but effectively. Pilates isn't just for women - quite the contrary!
